Word study...

One of today's goals is to remove the pesky, determined, ugly weeds that have sprouted up around the property. It will only be an hour or two worth of work but I have already done this once this year and it should have been enough...grrrr!
I thought it would be fun to see exactly what the definition of a weed is and here is what the American Dictionary of the English Language by Noah Webster 1828 says:
  • WEED, n. The general name of any plant that is useless or noxious. Whatever plant grows amoung corn, grass (yea right, in Acton? how about dirt!), or in hedges, and (get ready, here's my favorite part...) are either of no use to man or injurious to crops.
I don't know about you, but I know what useless is but what about noxious?
  • NOXIOUS, a. nok'shus. Hurtful; harmful; destructive; and unwholesome [my favorite :)].
Yep, an appropriate adjective for a weed.
As I start my day weeding...
  • WEEDING, n. The operation of freeing from noxious weeds.
My goal continues to have this property weedless...
  • WEEDLESS, a. Free from weeds or noxious matter!!

This completes my word study on WEEDs. Thanks for joining me :-)
